The August 21, 1980 Golden Transcript described an attempted burglary at 1800 Washington Avenue (map). The house had belonged to Mary Quaintance, who had died the previous February.
Burglars were in the process of removing a valuable silver tea service when they were surprised by Norman Leland, age 23, who was house-sitting the residence. The burglars attacked Leland with a knife, cutting his arm and one side. Leland produced a pair of nun-chucks and hit his attacker on the head with them. The burglars fled, sans silver tea service. Leland required stitches but no lasting damage was done.
Many thanks to Esther Kettering for sponsoring Golden History Moments for the month of August.
