Local News:
Last Friday, two people tubing on Clear Creek were pushed out of their tubes by the rushing water. The Golden Fire Department rescued one of the victims and the other washed down into Coors property, where he or she was retrieved by Coors safety personnel. Both wound up in the hospital, in fair condition.
The water flow of last Friday pales compared to today’s flow rates, and it’s expected to get worse before it gets better. Accordingly, the City and County have placed restrictions on using Clear Creek. For now, tubing is prohibited, along with any other single chamber inflatable device. Kayaking is still allowed, but participants must wear appropriate safety equipment. If you’re feeling moved to jump in the Creek right now, be sure you check out the restrictions.
Foreign News:
I rarely mention other cities, but this is of interest: residents of Lakewood are voting on a 1% growth limit today, similar to the one Golden’s residents approved in 1995. The arguments are the same ones we heard 24 years ago. Those in favor want to preserve their communities and slow redevelopment. Those against say that more housing is needed, and this will make Lakewood’s housing more expensive. I’ll be interested to see what Lakewood decides.
Business News:
Here’s an interesting change: Jolynn’s Food and Spirits at 1224 Washington Avenue will be closed for a few days, and when they re-open this Friday they will have a new name (Derive Bistro & the B.C. Underground) and a 100% vegan menu.
The Sports Section:
I never write about sports, but even I’m following this one: the US team is closing in on the Women’s World Cup, and one of the players is 25 year old Lindsey Horan, a Golden High School alum. Lindsey (and her team) will be playing England at 1PM today. I know of at least two watch parties. Miners Saloon and Holidaily will both have their TVs tuned to the game and happy hour pricing, starting at 1 o’clock. The final match will be Sunday morning, and hopefully the US Team will be in it. The Denver Kickers Club is holding a World Cup Watch Party Breakfast from 7-11AM. The game starts at 9.
