We've taken city hall out of the back alley! We've given our youth a recreation center! The cornerstone for Golden's "Second Century of Progress" has been laid!
Colorado Transcript - November 5, 1959

The City of Golden celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1959. The City was experiencing the post-World War II rush to suburbia and growing at a tremendous clip. City offices were located behind the fire station on 12th Street. In the spring of that year, the Chamber of Commerce and City Council members decided that the best way to celebrate the centennial would be construction of a new municipal center. It would include a new fire station, police station, library, museum, offices for City employees, a recreation center, and a swimming pool.

The proponents spent the summer barnstorming all the local groups (Lions, Kiwanis, Garden Club, etc.) to persuade them of the need and ask them to vote in favor of a bond issue.

It worked!
