It’s Golden’s own grassroots version of TED talks for the benefit of our own local community–and just for the fun of it. Golden Beer Talks is a nonprofit venture focused on three favorite local things–Golden and Beer and Talking!

Tonight’s Topic: the Denver Water North System Renewal – Ralston Dam (map) re-design
Introduction: Frank Blaha, Water Research Foundation
Speaker: Pete McCormick
Featured Brewery: New Image Brewery

Denver Water is building a new, state-of-the-art drinking water facility on a 183-acre site next to Ralston Reservoir, north of Golden in Jefferson County (map). The Northwater Treatment Plant (NTP) will be capable of treating up to 75 million gallons of water a day when it is operational in 2024. The new facility provides critical updates to Denver Water’s North System that is reaching the end of its lifespan, including improvements to the Moffat Treatment Plant in Lakewood to convey flow from NTP to Denver Water’s distribution system. The upgraded system will be safer, more resilient, and adaptable to changing demands in the future.

CITY MEETINGS

2:30PM Local Licensing Authority Meeting @ City Hall – CANCELED

Public Comments to City Council
On some Mondays, the City posts comments that members of the public have sent to City Council. Yesterday’s post covered some interesting issues. The post is hard to find, so I provide the following list of topics:

A citizen wrote that the he approved of charging a fee at public chargers for electric vehicles.

A senior citizen who had relied on two Air BnBs on her property for her income objected to the change that restricted her to having only one. She also objected to the way City staff had handled the change. She also mentioned the decision to keep food trucks off the street.

They received a note from a reporter at Westword, also covering the restrictions on food trucks.

Mile High Flood District wrote to inform them of a public meeting on November 16th concerning Clear Creek drainageways.

The Confluence Companies wrote to support the proposed Junction annexation north of town.

The owner of Woody’s Pizza expressed concern about the canvassers who frequently block the sidewalks (an ADA issue).

GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT

The November 21, 1929 Colorado Transcript included this advertisement for Transcript Christmas cards. The 1929 stock market crash had happened the previous month, and the Transcript used that event to continue their on-going campaign telling people to invest (and shop) locally.

In another sign of the times, the telephone company reminded people of the marvels and convenience of having a telephone. They were installing new ones at the rate of 70 per day in their service region. (They did not mention that their region included Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, El Paso Texas, and Ciudad Juarez, Chihauhua in Mexico.) Most households were not yet convinced of the need to have a telephone in the house.

Another technological marvel had come to town: the Golden Gem Theater was showing talkies! You can watch the 100 PER CENT TALKING PICTURE that they showed 94 years ago today: Big News.

Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
