Saturday in Golden

Farmers Market - Golden ColoradoThe Farmers Market will run from 8-1 this morning, in the parking lot at 10th & Illinois.

This is the final weekend for Thomas the Tank Engine’s annual visit to the Railroad Museum. If you’re going with a group of 4, you can get 4 tickets for the price of 3. To receive this discount, enter promo code 3PLUSME in the coupon code box before checking out online. Order your Day Out With Thomas Tickets here.

From 12-4 today, Earth Sweet Botanicals is offering FREE tea tasting. Teakoe is a local Colorado company with lots of wonderful, natural teas. Try flavors such as Wayward Watermelon, Mango Manifesto, and Boardwalk Blackberry.

Do you have a superfluity of fabric or other quilting supplies?  You should donate them to the Quilt Museum!  They have a “garage sale” every August where your unwanted sewing stuff can become some quilter’s heart’s desire…and raise some money for the Quilt Museum in the process.  Please bring your donations to the museum at 200 Violet Street (map). The museum’s hours are Monday – Saturday 10-4pm and Sunday – 11-4pm.

Golden is Buzzing Today

Saoirse Charis-Graves is holding a Coffee with a Councilor this morning from 10-11 at Bean Fosters (map). Here’s your chance to discuss any questions or concerns regarding city activities.

The Farmers Market will run from 8-1.  It’s an open-air farmers’ market with produce, meats, specialty items, including wine, pasta, salmon, garden art, and more, next to the Golden Public Library along Clear Creek.

Thomas the Tank Engine in Golden Colorado

Thomas the Tank Engine is at the Railroad Museum this weekend and next.  It’s best to buy your tickets ahead of time, since some of the most popular times are sold out.

The Golden City Brewery is having a “Beachless Beach Party” today.  I’m not sure what that entails, but it sounds like fun.

As mentioned yesterday, the VFW will have a car show from 8-1. Breakfast and lunch will be available, and there will be live music and raffle drawings.

The Golden Super Cruise runs from 5-8:30 on South Golden Road. If you like classic cars, plan to visit. If you dislike traffic congestion, avoid that area during those 3-1/2 hours.

If you love your own car, stop by the Hot Vehicles Photo Booth at the Golden Vision Clinic (map) between 5 and 8:30PM.

Pleasantly Cool Saturday

Clear Creek History Park - Golden Colorado

The Clear Creek History Park will be hosting Homesteading Day today from 10-2. Explore the historic cabins, cook on a woodstove, learn why blacksmithing is an art, take a lesson at the schoolhouse, and play forgotten games. Sounds like fun! The History Park is right across the creek from the Farmers Market (open 8-1), so do both!

Golden City Brewery is celebrating Summer Solstice with a fund-raiser today from 12-5.  $10 gets you a logo pint glass and a pint of beer or soda. The entire ten bucks goes right to the Art Reaching Kids program. Pile High Burgers will be there, and Steve Selinksky will be performing.

Earth Sweet Botanicals is offering a double class today–Light & Luscious Foods and Luscious Lips–from 2-4:30.  Put out the heat of summer with these light and luscious foods with scrumptious flavors and fresh ingredients. Then learn how to have luscious lips during the hot months with these recipes for all-natural lip products. Think herb-infused lip balms, sweet essential oil sugar scrubs and natural tinted lip gloss with skin moisturizing ingredients!  Call ahead to verify that they still have openings in the class:  303-278-1260.

The morning tickets are all sold out for Thomas the Tank Engine at the Railroad Museum, but there are a few left for the afternoon.

Avoiding the Growth Limit

The Downtown Development Authority meets tonight at 6:30 in City Council Chambers. They will consider a grant request by Abejas, which is remodeling the facade on their building, including the storefront that shares the building–Faith Tattoo.  They will also consider contributing $35,000 towards public improvements for a proposed new development on the southeast corner of 8th and Arapahoe.

West 8th Street Apts. - Golden Colorado

The big topic for the night will be the lot across from Safeway. This has been purchased by Confluence, the same company that built the West 8th Street Apartments. They intend to build a “dormitory” there. Despite that name, this has nothing to do with the School of Mines; it’s a commercial venture, offering a new style of housing. People who attended last week’s neighborhood meeting report that they plan to put 186 micro apartments on that lot, and that this development would sidestep Golden’s 1% growth limit.

The meeting will be shown live, starting at 6:30, on the City website.

Thomas the Tank Engine in Golden Colorado

The Railroad Museum will have their monthly Director’s Story Time and Craft tomorrow morning at 10.  Join fellow young train enthusiasts, in collaboration with the Golden Public Library, for a morning of rail stories and make-and-take crafts. Today’s story – The Little Red Caboose by Marian Potter Recommended ages 4-6 years old. Free for Museum Members and $2 for nonmembers with general admission.

Thomas the Tank Engine will be visiting the museum for the next three weekends.  Tickets for the most popular times sell out early, so if you’re interested, get your tickets now.

Local Business And Local Fun

44aptsIf you’ve been following the plan to build a 44 unit apartment building at 24th and Ford, you will be interested to hear that the decision to build has been appealed.  City Council will hear the case on October 13th.

This is a legal proceeding, and the city councilors aren’t allowed to discuss it outside of that night’s hearing.  So if you run into them at the grocery store, don’t try to engage them on the subject–they can’t talk about it.  There’s a note on the City’s homepage that explains the appeal process.

This is the second-to-last Farmer’s Market of the year, so GO–enjoy it while you can!  They’re there from 8AM-1PM.  This is also the last weekend for Thomas the Tank Engine‘s visit at the Railroad Museum.

Golden Gallop

Are you going to the Golden Gallop tomorrow morning?  You can run or you can walk, 5K or 10K.  There’s also a short fun run along the creek for kids.  If you don’t plan to run, just go downtown to watch–most of the participants live in Golden and it benefits the Golden Schools Foundation.  It’s fun!  The race starts at 8AM, led by Riley, the mustang mare!  Learn more.

Wild Weekend

Golden High School Homecoming paradeHomecoming parade – 2007

Come downtown for the GHS Homecoming Parade tonight at 5!  Then cheer on the home team at 7 at Marv Kay Stadium.

There’s a woodstove cooking class tomorrow morning at the Clear Creek History Park.  Participants will be making pies!  These classes often sell out, so call the Golden History Center to check, is you’re interested in attending:  303-278-3557.

Tomorrow afternoon, Earth Sweet Botanicals will offer a cooking class at 3PM:  Make Ahead Meals.

This will be the last weekend for Thomas the Tank Engine at the Railroad Museum, so if you’ve been meaning to go, buy your tickets now!

Fun with the Fire Department and Good Times with Thomas

Golden Fire Department

The Golden Fire Department and University of Colorado Burn Center will be celebrating Safety and Preparedness Day today from 10-2 . The event is free, and the entire family is encouraged to attend. Take advantage of a car seat check station, live fire demonstration, face painting, and tours of fire trucks and ambulances. Refreshments will be available, and prizes will be given away at the Fire Department, 911 10th Street (map). For more information, call the Fire Department at 303-215-8886.
