Both “Ooh!” and “Ah!”

Golden Chamber of Commerce's 30th Annual Candlelight WalkThe Golden Chamber’s Candlelight Walk is my favorite Golden event of the year, and tonight will be a beautiful night for it–unseasonably warm, with an almost-full moon. Meet at 6PM at Foothills Art Center (15th and Washington) for the walk. Bring a candle or glow stick, or buy one there. The crowd will be led by Santa Claus and will start down the hill at 6:30. When they get to the Visitors Center, the Mayor and a local girl will flip a switch and light the lights along the creek. It’s an “ooh” and “ah” moment! Afterwards, we’ll have a brief fireworks display, courtesy of the City.

Leadership Golden 2017 OrnamentThen you can walk around and enjoy a number of fun things. There will be a Christmas carol sing-along in Parfet Park, by the dragon statue; dancers performing in the Rotary Amphitheater along the creek; music and free admission at the Golden History Museum; more music and cookies at the Golden Library. The Golden Kiwanis Club will be serving roasted chestnuts at the Clear Creek History Park. The artist who designed this year’s Leadership Golden ornament (Julie Leidel) will be signing ornaments at the Visitors Center.

Christmas at Baby Doe's Clothing - Golden ColoradoDon’t forget to visit the downtown stores, because many of them are planning live music and free treats this evening. The Candlelight Walk is an enchanting event–Golden at its best.

For the complete run-down on the Candlelight Walk, tomorrow’s parade and other downtown events, and everything Christmas in Golden, check the calendar at goldentoday.com/christmas.

City Business and Weekend Music

Public Transit in Golden Colorado

City Council meets tonight at 6:30 in City Council Chambers.  Here are a few of the topics.  See the meeting packet for more details.

A group of concerned citizens will visit council to request a meeting to discuss concerns about growth and density in Golden.

RTD Collision of Purposes
On July 27th, Council voted to fund an additional green bus. Their objective was to increase bus service to and from the light rail station from every 30 minutes to every 15 minutes, thereby encouraging more frequent use of public transportation. On August 10th, our representative to the RTD board visited Council and let them know that RTD planned to reduce the frequency of light rail service to Golden from every 15 minutes to every 30 minutes at certain times of day. Council is understandably nonplussed about this decision and will vote on a resolution to request that RTD reconsider their plans.

City Staff will present their proposed 2018 Capitol Improvement Plan to Council.

Council will acknowledge an agreement that the Public Art Commission has made with Foothills Art Center and Golden High School to install a mural along north Washington Avenue. The theme will be Help, Hope, and Strength. It ties it with the High School’s suicide prevention program.

Rally for Unity in Parfet Park

Parfet Park - Golden Colorado

Don’t forget tonight’s gathering at 6PM in Parfet Park to promote Tolerance and Unity.  This event was organized in the wake of the Charlottesville, Virginia clash involving white supremacists, in which one counter-protester and two police officers died.  The event has been organized by Golden UnitedThe rally will include group singing led by members of the Golden Community Choir. Many people are willing to listen to and appreciate those whose beliefs are different from our own, that is, until those beliefs overstep decency and do not hold all humanity as equal. As images of violence once again flash across our screens, we can no longer be silent. Racists were not afraid to show their faces. People who do not agree with them must show our faces, too. Please share this invitation and bring signs that express unity. Please do not bring political signs. This rally is organized by Golden United, a non-partisan, residents-driven effort to engage the Golden area community across all walks of life to find common ground and act with respect and dignity to strengthen OUR community. Questions can be directed to Ron Benioff (benioffron@gmail.com).

There will also be a meeting at 6PM at the Community Center to discuss the planned changes to Washington Avenue north of downtown. Please join us next Tuesday, August 22 at 6 p.m. for the next meeting on the Washington Avenue Complete Street project. This project includes improvements on Washington Avenue between 10th Street north to Hwy 93. Based on input at previous public meetings and direction from City Council, we have completed design work and prepared a phasing plan. You can learn more about the project and view concept plans on our City Projects pageThe design team would like your input on specific aesthetic treatments and landscaping.  Note: this will not be an openhouse-style meeting, where you just wander in at any time.  The doors will open at 6PM and a formal presentation will begin at 6:30.

Concert in the Park Tonight

Jefferson Symphony Orchestra - Golden Colorado

The Golden Fine Arts Festival continues today from 10AM-5PM.  At 6:30, the Jefferson Symphony Orchestra will perform a FREE concert in Parfet Park!

Bring your family and a picnic dinner and enjoy an evening of great music as you relax on the lawn.

The JSO, under the direction of Associate Conductor Steve Mallinson will perform a variety of familiar music from around the word including Shostakovich’s Festive Overture, Grainger’s Irish Tune from County Derry, Star Trek Through the Years and American favorite In the Moon and Sing, Sing, Sing.

It’s a good old-fashioned concert in the park that the whole family will enjoy!

The Golden Library will have a viewing party tomorrow from 10-1 to watch the solar eclipse.  They have only a few of the eclipse-viewing glasses left, and they’re keeping those few for sharing during the viewing party.
