A Rodeo at 2017 Golden National Night Out Celebration

It was unusual to see a Golden police officer weaving between traffic cones and tossing his motorcycle side-to-side as if he was in a motorcycle rodeo.  It was even more unusual when this occurred at Parfet Park, the venue where Golden Police Department hold their annual National Night Out (NNO) party…  Read more…

Let’s Have a Party in Parfet Park!

National Night Out in the Park - Golden Colorado

Let’s all thank the Golden Parks Department because they’re charged with getting Parfet Park cleaned up today, in the wake of Buffalo Bill Days and in anticipation of tomorrow night’s Golden Night Out in the Park!

National Night Out is an annual community-building event that promotes police-community partnerships. It’s a great opportunity to met your local police personnel, learn about what they do, see their equipment, and get some good safety information. All of this while having fun with live music, performances, raffle prizes, and free popcorn and root beer floats! So lock your doors, turn on your porch lights and come out to enjoy free food, entertainment, interactive displays and the always popular landing of the Flight for Life helicopter!

The party runs from 5-8PM on Tuesday, August 1st, in Parfet Park.  The year, the police will be giving out trigger locks, in order to promote gun safety in Golden homes–particularly those with children.  They will also hold two drawings each hour for handgun safes.  These gun safety giveaways are inspired by the ordinance that City Council will vote on this Thursday, requiring that guns must be locked in homes where children are present.

Night Out recap, city council elections, planning commission, and public art

Last night’s National Night Out in Parfet Park was delightful–very low key, lots of locals, free hot dogs, root beer floats, snow cones…and a helicopter!  See the photos.

This is an election year for some of the City Council positions, including the Mayor and both districts (Marcie Miller and Saoirsa Charis-Graves).  Marcie has announced that she will not run again for her District 2 position.  Mayor Sloan and Councilor Charis-Graves are planning to run for re-election.

One of the District 2 candidates, Lauree Valverde, is holding a campaign kick-off party at Cannonball Creek from 6-8.  We will announce other election events as we hear about them!

If you’re thinking of running for City Council, check out the City Clerk’s page describing how to do it.

Planning Commission meets tonight at 6:30 in City Council chambers.  They will hold a public hearing on a proposed change to the process for vacating streets.  The change is designed to make the review process more rigorous.  FYI, “vacating” a street means the city is agreeing to give it up as a public street.  See the meeting packet for the details.

The Public Arts Commission meets tomorrow morning at 9.  They will decide on a vendor to develop some medallions to be embedded in the sidewalk between the library and Clear Creek.  They will discuss a possible art installation at the entrance to the Heritage Dells neighborhood.  They will consider a first draft of an RFP for a major new piece to be placed in the roundabout at South Golden Road and Ulysses.  See the meeting packet for the details.

National Night Out…and jazz

The Golden Police Department invites you to join them in Parfet Park tonight from 5-8 for free food (grilled hot dogs!) entertainment and fun. Lock your doors, turn on your porch light, and enjoy a summer evening in the park.

National Night Out is a series of nationwide celebrations held on the first Tuesday in August each year. The purpose of National Night Out is to give neighbors an opportunity to get together in a setting close to home. Of the many crime prevention strategies out there, familiarity and communication among neighbors ranks among the most effective.

Learn more on the City website.

Conveniently enough, the Clear Creek Jazz Quartet will be playing right across the street, at the Golden Hotel, from 6-9.  After your free hot dog, you can enjoy an after-dinner drink and some cool jazz!

Another week, and more parties

Dave Powers was at the Buffalo Bill Museum yesterday for their Mountain Melodies Festival. Check out the photos on our Facebook page!

The Historic Preservation Board will meet tonight at 6:30 in City Council Chambers.  They will discuss a plan to survey historic buildings, and a plan to produce more signs for historic sites and districts in Golden.  The meeting will be broadcast live through the City website.

Barrels & Bottles is hosting a fund-raiser tonight for Pleasant View Elementary School.  They are releasing a peach beer from 5-7, and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the school.  The Golden Rotary Club will be on hand, taking orders for their annual peach sale.  You’re running out of time to order peaches!

Tomorrow (Tuesday) night, the Golden Police will host their 17th Annual National Night Out, in Parfet Park.  Details tomorrow!
