Fabulous First Friday

Downtown Golden will be hopping tonight! The Chamber of Commerce is hosting a First Friday event from 5-7PM, with live improv on the streets, free face painting, and local musicians. Clear Creek Carriage Company will be offering free horse-drawn carriage rides from 5-7:30PM, thanks to their sponsor, the Golden Super Cruise.

Miners Saloon is celebrating their one-year anniversary starting at 11:30 today, with a whole tank of Coors Banquet Beer, fresh from the brewery. Local faves The Skeleton Dolls will play live music at the Saloon, starting at 5.

Movies in the Park - Golden ColoradoThe City’s Movies and Music in the Park kicks off at 7PM with a DJ dance party. They’ll also have a karaoke sing-off of an excerpt from Taylor Swift’s Shake it Off, which is also featured in tonight’s movie. The movie, Sing, is an animated musical comedy. Bring a picnic or buy dinner from one of the food trucks.

Buffalo Rose - Golden ColoradoThe Buffalo Rose is having a Big Band Swing Dance party tonight, featuring the swing-era music of Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Glenn Miller, Stan Kenton, Gene Krupa, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Diane Schuur, Buddy Rich, and more.  If you like to swing dance, plan to attend from 8-11PM.  If you don’t know how to dance, go early, because they’re offering a lesson from 7-8!


Tomorrow Night
Mount Vernon Canyon Club - Golden ColoradoThe Mount Vernon Country Club is celebrating their 94th anniversary with a re-branding: hereafter, they will be known as the Mount Vernon Canyon Club.  They invite you to join them tomorrow night from 4-7PM for their 94th Birthday Bash. A $0.94 menu will include draft beer, house wine, and appetizers. Tours of the club will be available for prospective members.

Named for its proximity to Mount Vernon Canyon, MVCC opened in 1923 and is one of the oldest private clubs in the Denver area. With an eco-friendly horse pasture, instead of a golf course, and activities such as running and biking clubs for members, MVCC has long established itself as distinctly Colorado and continues to break the mold as it nears almost a century of service to the Denver area. M and Movies and Music

M Climb at the Colorado School of Mines

The freshmen at the School of Mines will leave the campus at 8 this morning for the annual M Climb.  They should reach the M at about 10AM.  The road up the mountain (Lariat Loop Trail) is closed this morning, but look up at the M, mid-morning, and you might see tiny figures scurrying around applying a new coat of whitewash.

There’s a lot going on this weekend, but here’s one thing you can take off your to-do list:  Little Shop of Horrors at Miners Alley is SOLD OUT through the end of the run.

Tonight is the opening reception for the Fine Arts Festival.  It’s 5:30-7 at the Briarwood Inn.

Movies and Music in the Park was cancelled, due to the rain & wind.

Tomorrow morning at 10, join Councilor Casey Brown for Coffee with a Councilor at City Hall.  From there, you’ll be conveniently poised to hit the Fine Arts Festival on 11th Street.

The Railroad Museum is running a Whistle Stop Tour from 9 – 5 tomorrow.  They’ll have politicians, past and present, making speeches from the back end of one of their antique railcars.

Movies and Music Tomorrow Night

The moon was full at 3:26 this morning.  Tomorrow night, during Movies and Music in the Park, the moon will rise at 8:45 PM.  I love sitting in Parfet Park and watching the moon appear over Castle Rock!  Tomorrow night’s band, “Flock of Beagles,” will start playing at 7, and the movie (Zootopia) will start at dusk.  Tomorrow is supposed to be cooler, so bring a sweatshirt or a blanket!

Don’t forget tomorrow night’s opening reception for the Golden Fine Arts Festival.  It runs from 5:30-7, so you’ll have plenty of time to do that before the movie!

Even better, the City’s Movies and Music in the Park series starts tomorrow night.  Here’s the line-up for the season:

Bring a picnic or buy food from the vendors on site.  There will be a band each Friday, beginning at 7, and the movie will start at dusk.

Want to learn more about community-based, sustainable agriculture?  The Library is hosting program tonight at 6:30, featuring GoFarmGoFarm is becoming the cornerstone of a sustainable food economy in Golden. Their Local Food Share program sources locally grown and raised fruits, vegetables and eggs. GoFarm is committed to making healthy, affordable produce accessible to the entire community, while giving a hand up to our small farmers. Come meet representatives from GoFarm; listen as they explain their mission and how the community can participate in the program.

The City has released the list of movies & bands for this summer’s Movies and Music in the Park.  Each week, the band will start at 7PM and the movie will start at dusk.

Do you want to build a snowman?

Tonight is the final Movies and Music in the Park, and it’s a Frozen sing-a-long.  Head to Parfet Park tonight and enjoy this wildly popular Disney movie with your friends and neighbors.  It should be a gorgeous night, with an almost-full moon.

Dr. Harlan’s Amazing Bluegrass Tonic will kick off the evening at 7, and the movie will start at dusk.

Movies, Music, Safety, and Splash

Tonight is the third of four nights of Movies and Music in the Park.  Dixie Leadfoot will play from 7 till dusk, at which time tonight’s movie, Big Hero 6, will play.  Next week’s Frozen singalong will be the last movie of the year!


The Jefferson County District Attorney is hosting his annual safety fair tomorrow from 9-1 at the Jeffco Fairgrounds.  This free event offers document shredding (limit 5 boxes), small electronics recycling, prescription round-up, bike rodeo for kids, and more. With over 90 booths, the event offers a complete range of safety services for kids, adults, parents, and seniors. Free parking lot shuttle. For more information, call Cary Johnson at 303-271-6970.


Tomorrow and Sunday will be the final 2015 days of operation for the City’s water park, The Splash.  They will be open 10-6:30 both days!

Movies, music, splashing, and art

Movies and Music in the Park continues tonight:  PJ Zahn will be playing in Parfet Park, starting at 7PM.  Tonight’s movie, Maleficent, will start at dusk.

Dash at the Splash kids’ triathlon takes place tomorrow morning, starting at 8AM.  The Splash is coming to the end of its season.  It will be open from 10-6:30 this weekend.  Next week, August 17-Friday the 21st, the leisure pool and diving board will be closed, as will concessions.  The lap pool will be open 6AM-6:15PM.  Next weekend, Splash will be open with full hours and all facilities both Saturday and Sunday, 10-6:30PM.

Get ready for the Golden Fine Arts Festival!  Saturday and Sunday (the 15th & 16th) from 10AM-5PM.
