Neighborhood Rehab Project

A Hands-On Approach to Affordable Housing
There’s been much discussion lately about Golden’s need for affordable housing. It is certainly difficult for someone new to the community to find an affordable place to live. Golden home prices have skyrocketed in recent years, and rental rates in apartments are nothing short of stunning.

Neighborhood Rehab ProjectOne oft overlooked group needing affordable housing is older people who have owned places in Golden for many years. They have little or no mortgage, so they can afford to stay where they are, but they can’t afford to move any place else, because they couldn’t afford rent. As these long-term residents age, they may find home maintenance more difficult, both physically and financially.

There is a program here in Golden that helps these residents stay in their homes by helping them with home maintenance tasks. The Neighborhood Rehab Project has an annual Day of Service, where scores of volunteers fan out all over Golden to keep our community members warm, safe, and dry by fixing roofs, painting, patching, doing minor plumbing fixes and yard work. They call this the Be a Tool Day of Service. Volunteers receive t-shirts that say “I’m a Tool.” They’ve been doing this for several years, and they’ve helped many Golden residents stay in their homes.  Be A Tool has been so popular and so effective that Arvada, Englewood, and Idaho Springs now have their own Be A Tool days!

The 7th Annual Day of Service Neighborhood Rehab Project will be September 9, 2017. Please consider signing up to help this year! The deadline to register is this Monday, August 28thSee the website to learn more and register.

FAQ About

I ran into Dan Thoemke (of Be A Tool fame) last night at the “soft” opening for State-38’s new downtown tasting room.  He asked what had become of my website,  When you go to that domain now, you see a big picture of the Golden Gate Bridge.

I did announce the change at the beginning of the year, but considering how often people ask the same question Dan asked, I should announce it again.

“” was a very desirable domain.  People contacted me at least once a week to ask me to sell it.  After the November election, I needed something to cheer me up–so I sold the domain to a guy from Canada.  He plans to hold onto it until somebody offers him even more money.  (It worked, by the way.  I felt much better after I received the payment for the domain.  I used it to spend a month in London.)

As for my website–it’s still there.  You can find exactly the same content at my new domain–WWW.GOLDENTODAY.COM.  In addition to my three daily columns–What’s Happening in Golden?, Golden Business News, and News About Golden–you’ll find lists of every store and restaurant in town, local service providers, breweries & distilleries, and Golden industries great and small.  You’ll also find lots of things to do, information about summer camps, and much more.

Visit GOLDENTODAY.COM!  Tell your friends & neighbors!

The semi-annual Beautiful Junk Sale is open today and tomorrow at the Jeffco Fairgrounds.  Lots of bargains to be found, and the proceeds benefit the Jeffco Action Center.

Coffee, Chili, Theater, Tools, and Golf

Casey Brown’s Coffee with a Councilor will run from 10-11 this morning at the Community Center.  A good chance to hear what the City is working on, and to express any thoughts or concerns you might have.

The Lions Club Chili Supper will run from 3-7 today at 400 10th Street.  The chili is free, but they do sell beer and wine, and they’re having a bake sale.  The proceeds support their charitable and community projects.

Miners Alley Playhouse will host three performances today.  The Children’s Theater will present Robin Hood at 11 and 1.  This is a lot of fun for the kids, as they’re often invited to join the actors on stage.  The performance of Hir starts at 7:30.  This production is drawing great critical acclaim.  The acting is superb, and the characters are–well, challenging.  You’re never sure whose side you should be on.  The play is rated R for strong language and adult content.

The Be A Tool group is looking for 20 volunteers to help some neighbors with home repairs next Saturday, February 25th.  Learn more and sign up….

This may come as a surprise, but Fossil Trace is open.  If you’re a golfer, call (303) 277-8750 for a tee time.

The Golden Transcript needs to hear from Golden residents, for a story they’re writing about Golden holiday traditions.  They would like your answers to these questions:

How do you celebrate the holidays?
What is your favorite holiday tradition? (Why?)
What makes this time of year special?

If you are interested in sharing your traditions, please email Crystal Anderson at – you might see your story shared in the paper.  The deadline for stories is 11/25 (tomorrow).

Golden volunteer effort “Be a Tool” becomes a model for other cities

By Josie Klemaier

GOLDEN — A community volunteer project in Golden has grown to more than 400 volunteers, is considered “a bedrock for Golden” by the mayor and is becoming a model for surrounding communities.

“I don’t know of any effort in Golden, or in fact in any city, that is so broad-based and so openhearted really in working in homes that need just a little bit of care,” Golden Mayor Marjorie Sloan said…  Read more….
