Today marks the beginning of Sunshine Week 2020–an annual celebration of Freedom of Information. Sunshine Week is a national initiative spearheaded by the American Society of News Editors to educate the public about the importance of open government and the dangers of excessive and unnecessary secrecy. It was established in March 2005 with funding from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

The Geology Museum at the School of Mines is now closed. The Library is also closed. So the Golden Library Textile Society, the Jefferson Symphony Concert, and the Golden Gate Grange Wildlife program–all originally scheduled for today–have all been canceled or postponed. I have less and less to write about every day!
As of last night, Jefferson County reported one new person with Coronavirus, bringing the total to 8 in our County (population 574,613 as of 2017). Four of the eight reported recent international travel, two are still under investigation, one is “known contact,” and one is reported as “community spread.”
Just remember – if we can minimize the spread right now, we’ll be able to look back and think the whole thing was no big deal.

Golden History Moment
Golden was in a major self-improvement drive during the 1920s. We built a new high school and Parfet Park, paved many of the streets, demolished a decrepit, 40-year-old hotel and sought out someone who would build a new, modern hotel on our main drag. In 1925, a Mr. Robert Berry opened the Hotel Berrimoor. The Hotel went through many incarnations through the Depression and World War II, but finally found an owner with solid business sense in 1948, when it was purchased by Lu Holland. He ran it as The Holland House until he retired in the 1980s. His 30+ years was the longest run to date, but the Holland House successor, the Table Mountain Inn, is closing in on that record. It has been thriving since 1991.

1925 – The Hotel Berrimoor opened. The owner left the business in 1928 and by 1929 the hotel was in receivership.
1932 – Reopened as the Cody Hotel. The Transcript reported that “A neon sign with the name superimposed on a huge cowboy hat is now being manufactured.” The sign was installed on March 10, 1932.
1937 – The Transcript referred to it as The Wright Hotel.
1939 – A Mrs. Higbie bought the hotel from Mr. Wright and renamed it the Golden Hotel.
1943 – the Hibbards bought it from the Golden Savings & Loan and named it the LaRay Hotel.
1948 – The hotel was purchased by Lu Holland and renamed The Holland House. The Holland House closed in 1987.
1991 – The Table Mountain Inn opened. In 1999, it expanded from 32 rooms to 74.
The Golden Transcript (originally called the Colorado Transcript) has been publishing since 1866. The Golden History Museum has been working on digitizing the historic issues. You’ll find old Transcripts online at coloradohistoricnewspapers.org. You can contribute to the cost of the digitizing project with a donation to the Golden History Museum.
