Golden History Moment
The May 7, 1942 Colorado Transcript covered the beginning of World War II-era sugar rationing. Before long, many other foodstuffs were rationed, including butter, sugar and canned milk, meat, dairy, coffee, lard, shortening, and oils. Non-food items were rationed as well, such as rubber, gasoline, fuel oil, coal, nylon, silk, and shoes.
The over-riding reason for rationing was that these items were needed “for the war effort.” The troops had to be fed. Fuel, tires, and metals were needed for tanks, jeeps, and weapons.
Some items were hard to get because of interrupted trade: the rubber needed to make tires had been imported from Indonesia, which was under Japanese control during the war.
We also had labor shortages, because so much of our labor force was fighting overseas.
In response to the sugar shortage, the Transcript printed a recipe for Cake Without Sugar. The keep seems to be corn syrup. (That’s Karo Syrup, which I have never owned. My mother used to have that around, but I’m not sure what she used it for!)
The Golden Transcript (originally called the Colorado Transcript) has been publishing since 1866. The Golden History Museum has been working on digitizing the historic issues.
