GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT
You probably already know about Golden’s major historic industries–paper mill, flour mills, bricks, pottery, glass, mines, smelters–not to mention the giant brewery on the east side of town.
Obscure Industries
Articles from the 1860s through early 1900s reference some lesser-known Golden industries, including a match factory on Ford Street and a fertilizer factory at the west end of 8th Street. There was a blacksmith shop that produced custom wagons at 12th and Ford. The blacksmith invented an improved hinge, which he patented and manufactured. We had a mattress factory, which used machinery for picking rags and washing them.
We had a few cigar factories. The earliest reference I find to a cigar factory was from 1872, and the last was 1905, so that industry had some staying power. One factory produced “Golden City Belles,” while another made “Golden Reds.”
That’s about all I was able to discover about these lesser-known industries, so most were likely either short-lived or stayed very small
Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
