SATURDAY PREVIEW
Golden will be packed tomorrow. The Mines homecoming game will begin at noon in Marv Kay Stadium. The Coors 150th anniversary celebration will run from noon-6PM on Washington Avenue and in Parfet Park. After 6, Coors will have a private party (employees, retirees, invited guests) in the Clear Creek lot on 10th Street. The Farmers Market will close an hour earlier than usual–at noon–to clear the way for the other events.
Washington Avenue will be closed. The Clear Creek lot will be closed. The downtown parking garages will be open, but remember that parking is no longer free on weekends, and parking tickets are now $100. See the City’s parking page for more information about weekend closures, shuttles, etc.
GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT
COORS @ 150
After World War II, Coors entered a time of tremendous growth. To enable their expansion, they gradually purchased property adjacent to the brewery. The Goosetown neighborhood was particularly affected. Where there once were a few dozen homes, we now see parking lots and Highway 58.
In 1975, Coors needed more room for beer “cellars,” the buildings where beer is stored for aging. They approached the City of Golden, proposed an exchange of several parcels of land, and asked the City to allow them to reroute 10th Street to make room for their newest building. The City agreed.
The July 28, 1975 Golden Transcript reported that the exchange of land and rights of way was complete, and that 10th Street had been rebuilt at Coors’ expense.
Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
