Plan for DeLong Park – click to enlarge

6:30PM City Council Regular Business Meeting
City Council will meet early, at 6PM, for an executive session (no cameras, no public) to discuss the Kinney Run Greenway project. The regular business meeting will begin at 6:30PM.

They will read Proclamations for Mental Health Month (May 2021), National Police Week (May 9th -15th, 2021) and National Peace Officer’s Memorial Day (May 15, 2021), Building Safety Month (May 2021), and Golden Graduates Week (May 14th- 20th, 2021).

They will vote on whether to approve the purchase of a house at 1020 Archer Street (map) for $720,000. This is the second recent purchase in Goosetown. Two weeks ago, they paid $545,000 to buy a house on Depot Street. The plan is to demolish both houses if voters will approve construction of a new municipal center.

They will hear the Parks Department’s proposal for maintaining the Lubahn Trail on South Table Mountain.

They will consider establishing a residential parking permit system on and near Belvedere Drive. That area has been overrun by parked cars belonging to people taking the trails on South Table Mountain.

They will vote on whether to approve the bid of $805,100 to construct DeLong Park.

The City Manager will discuss how the City plans to manage the crowds along the Creek this summer.

Golden History Moment

The Central Fire Station was located on 12th Street, between the Astor House and the Loveland Building (now Old Capitol Grill). The City offices were located in the back of the building. – top photo from the Golden History Museum collection; lower photo from the Denver Public Library Western History Collection – click to enlarge

As Golden approached its 100th anniversary (which would occur in June of 1959), Golden’s leaders–particularly the Chamber of Commerce–determined that we had outgrown our pioneer-era City offices. In the spring of 1958, Heinie Foss, owner of the Foss Drug, led a committee to plan a new complex of buildings that would include the city offices, police and fire departments, a swimming pool, library, museum, and recreation center.

The committee waged an “intense campaign” to persuade voters of the desirability of the project, and in November of 1959, a $350,000 bond issue was approved. The new municipal center was dedicated on May 6, 1961.

The May 11, 1961 Colorado Transcript swooned over the ceremonies held the previous Saturday:

Dedication of Golden’s new Municipal Center probably will stand as the greatest triumph in Golden’s Second Century…many other wonderful things will happen in the next 98 years but never again will the fulfillment of a dream become so true as it did last Saturday–“comparing old city hall to these new quarters is like comparing a Model T Ford to a Cadillac” once observer said.

The Golden Transcript (originally called the Colorado Transcript) has been publishing since 1866. The Golden History Museum has been working on digitizing the historic issues. You’ll find old Transcripts online at coloradohistoricnewspapers.org
