Golden History Moment
This farewell message appeared on Golden Today a year ago today. Meyer Hardware closed its doors for the last time on September 26, 2021. In 1945, Joe and Ruby Meyer bought the old Sarell Hardware, which had served Golden since the 1860s. When their only child, Marilyn, married Harold Schaeffer, he became part of the family enterprise. Eventually, Marilyn and Harold’s son Steve took over the business, and so Meyer Hardware continued to serve Golden until 2021–a total of 76 years.
When the store closed, many locals feared that the building would be replaced by another multi-story “mixed use” building, with restaurants at street level and condos above. Instead, a wonderful thing happened: the Schaeffer family sold the building to Miners Alley Playhouse. Beginning next year, we can all look forward to visiting the Miners Alley Performing Arts Center.
In the meantime, Golden is scheduled to get a new hardware store. Ace Hardware plans to open sometime in October in The Village shopping center, next to the Goodwill store.
Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
