Golden History Moment

Colorado Transcript – December 5, 1918

For much of 1918, even as the Influenza pandemic raged around the globe, Golden was dodging the bullet. In December, it seemed our turn had come.

The December 5, 1918 Colorado Transcript reported that fifty households had been placed under quarantine, with some households having multiple cases. Both the School of Mines and the Golden public schools were closed to prevent spread of the disease. The schools were expected to stay closed until the new year.

As a wartime measure, School of Mines at that time was being run by the Student Army Training Corps. They had converted the top two floors of the Armory building into a temporary hospital for treatment of influenza patients. They had treated 50 patients by December 5th, with no fatalities.

The December 5th issue reported that Charles Nolin, 28 year old native son of Golden, had died of pneumonia caused by influenza. The following week (Dec. 12th), the Transcript announced the influenza death of Henry Foss, and the week after that (Dec. 19th) it reported that Oscar Nolin (brother of Charles), Mrs. L. A. Packard, Mrs. Wm. Johnston, Mrs. Richter, and M.R. Iler had all succumbed.

From that low point, the situation improved rapidly. On December 26th, the Transcript announced that Golden was free of the epidemic, and the January 2nd issue declared that the ban on public gatherings would be lifted that week.
