Golden History Moment
I’ve been reading a lot articles lately about shifting from natural gas to electricity. I was therefore struck by a September 4, 1930 article about converting the Golden Fire Brick company from coal to natural gas. The gas franchise had just come to Golden that summer, and customers were anxious to make the switch, for several reasons: it was cleaner than coal; it didn’t require storage space (unlike big piles of coal); and gas burned evenly and reliably.
Natural gas…recently replaced coal for fuel at the Golden plant and the first kilns of brick turned out with the new fuel have been termed “very satisfactory….” Coal already in storage at the Golden plant to being used in some of the kilns at the present time, but all will eventually be equipped to use gas for fuel. The cost of converting the kilns for gas will cost between $10,000 and $12,000.
“We are changing over to gas, with the matter of economy not so much in mind as the hope that it will enable us to improve the quality of our product,” said James Knox, manager of the concern. “We are, therefore, closely watching every kiln, in the hope that a still better Golden brick will result from the new methods.”
