Proposed retaining wall mural at 19th and Washington – click to enlarge

6:30PM Downtown Development Authority Meeting
The DDA Board will consider two grant requests tonight. The first is a $12,000 contribution toward a mural to be painted on the retaining wall at 19th and Washington. The second is a request for $5,000 to be used by the Golden History Museum toward the cost of hosting a new public event this fall, to be called the Autumn Fest.

The big news of the night will be a presentation about the CoorsTek property on 9th Street, between Ford and Washington. The company has been doing a gradual move to the Coors Technology Center for several years. Now they are ready to redevelop their ancestral home. Tonight will provide our first look at their plans for that area.

Golden History Moment

1937 encampment at Camp George West – Golden History Museum Collection – click to enlarge

In the early 20th century, the Colorado National Guard spent two weeks every summer at the Colorado Rifle Range (later renamed as “Camp George West”). The Transcript–always interested in military affairs–wrote about the event every summer, and townsfolk often planned special events to make the visiting guardsmen welcome.

The June 21, 1923 Colorado Transcript reported that the 157th Infantry Band from the National Guard encampment had given a concert for the town. “The concert was splendid, the boys playing a high class of music in excellent style. That Golden people heartily appreciated the entertainment goes without saying, and on every hand there was lavish praise for the musicians. Following the concert, the boys were taken to the Golden club and treated to ice cream, cake, soft drinks, cigars and cigarettes.”

The Golden Transcript (originally called the Colorado Transcript) has been publishing since 1866. The Golden History Museum has been working on digitizing the historic issues. You’ll find old Transcripts online at coloradohistoricnewspapers.org.
