Golden History Moment
The January 8, 1914 Colorado Transcript reported on the previous City Council meeting. It seems Golden was having a good month. They started with the report of the City Health Officer:
When the people of a city are in such excellent health as to prove exasperating to the physicians, that fact is worthy of note, and that is just the condition of Golden at the present time, according to the monthly report of City Health Officer, Dr. Arnold Minnig, submitted to the city council last Friday evening. Dr. Minnig was short and to the point, as follows: “I beg leave to report that the health in Golden is exasperatingly good.
Arnold Minnig, health officer.
They went on to hear from the “superintendent of the pipe line,” who reported that we had 56 inches of snow in December and the reservoirs all had plenty of water.
I love the fact that the City Council articles of this time included a complete list of bills approved for the month, including salaries.

The January 8, 1971 Golden Transcript reported that the Cecil H. and Ida Green Graduate Center was nearing completion.
Green, a co-founder of Texas Instruments, jump-started the building with a $1.4 million donation. Corporations, foundations, and individuals contributed an addition $2.5 million and the State of Colorado contributed $600,000.
Green was not a Mines graduate–he held a B.S. and M.S. in Electrical Engineering from M.I.T.–but Mines had granted him an honorary doctorate in 1953.
The new building contained the Geophysics and Mineral Economics Departments, the Brown computing center, many laboratories and lecture halls, and the 1386 seat Bunker Auditorium.
Many thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
