After Dark Winter Wonderland Walks + Golden’s Holiday Light Display
Golden’s impressive holiday lights transform the charming town into a winter wonderland with downtown, the Clear Creek Walking Path, Golden History Park, Parfet Park and the Visitors Center spectacularly illuminated with an estimated 45,000 bulbs. A single giant evergreen tree in front of the Golden Visitors Center is wrapped in approximately 5,000 lights all on its own. Start a new family tradition and bundle up, pick up hot cocoa at a Golden coffee shop, and enjoy an evening walk with holiday lights reflecting in the icy waters of Clear Creek and in the downtown shop windows.

Golden History Moment

Telephone Company Ad from the January 13, 1921 Colorado Transcript – click to enlarge

A century ago, the Mountain States Telephone & Telegraph Co. ran a large ad every week in the Colorado Transcript. Use of the telephone was growing at a great clip at that time. I enjoyed this special Stock Show edition–particularly since the 2021 Stock Show was canceled because of the pandemic.

I recently read that the Stock Show had been canceled only one other time: in 1915, due to an outbreak of hoof & mouth disease. Based on an article I found in the January 14, 1915 Transcript, the non-cattle aspects of the stock show apparently still took place. “There will be a National Horse Show, the National Poultry Show, the Agricultural Exhibition and the big Baby show, and in addition arrangements will be made for a Dog Show and the usual Industrial Exposition.”

Many thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
