Golden History Moment

Berthoud Hall on the Colorado School of Mines Campus, 1938
First completed section of Berthoud Hall of the School of Mines campus – Colorado Transcript – February 17, 1938

The February 17, 1938 Colorado Transcript included this unusual view of Berthoud Hall. This artist’s rendering of the yet-to-be-built geology building shows the central core of the building, without the wings.

Berthoud was built with substantial assistance from the Roosevelt-era Works Progress Administration (WPA). That program required local matching funds. When the school initially applied for a grant, it only had enough to fund its part of the center core of the building. It received the grant in early 1938, and construction began that same spring. It was completed by the end of 1938.

The school had continued to look for funding and was able to raise enough to enlarge the building. In August of 1938, they received a second grant to add wings on the north and south ends of the central building.

The Geology Department began moving into the new building in late December, 1938. Construction began on the wings in early 1939. The plan was to house the Geology Department in the central building, the Geophysics Department in the east wing, and a new Geology Museum in the west wing.

The completed building, newly-christened “Berthoud Hall,” was dedicated on Engineers Day, March 15, 1940.
