GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT

The M, with modern, LED lights – Chris Davell – enlarge

In 1973, the United States was in the midst of the Energy Crisis–a sudden shortage of petroleum products brought about by OPEC’s decision to cut oil production. Americans everywhere were discussing how (and whether) to cut energy consumption. In Golden, much of this discussion focused on the School of Mines’ “M”-blem.

Excerpts from the December 4, 1973 Oredigger – see the full issue

The December 4, 1973 Oredigger (the School’s newspaper) included an editorial by the Oredigger staff, stating that the M should be turned off. The Letters to the Editor section included several responses, both pro- and con-. Blue Key Honor Society, which maintains the M, was particularly emphatic in disagreement. They pointed out that they had already removed every other bulb and that it was currently using about 200 15-watt bulbs.

In contrast, they stated that a popcorn popper used 1200 watts. They also surveyed the campus and revealed that the Green Center kept 45 outside lights on (9000 watts total), 33 inside lightbulbs (4950 watts) and 160 fluorescent lights (6400 watts). The student union had similarly shocking energy use, including 50 150-watt lights in the snack bar.

Correspondents who agreed that the M should be turned off said it would be “a good example,” and would show solidarity with the national cause.
