2-4PM Sunday at the Museum with the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum via Zoom
Join us on Sunday, November 14, 2021, with Scotti McCarthy as she presents a new RMQM lecture – Red and White Quilts.  The simplicity of a two-color quilt is far from understated when it comes to red and white quilts.  These quilts can be absolutely breathtaking and are a beauty to behold.  Join RMQM as we present our newest trunk show that will be available to public organizations in 2022.

Golden History Moment

Hotel Bella Vista (formerly located at 12th and Jackson) from the Dan Abbot Collectionclick to enlarge

The Bella Vista Hotel was built in the early 1880s. It had stores, a post office, a bar, and a billiard room on the first floor, a grand ballroom on the second floor, and 75 guestrooms. Unfortunately, in that era Golden couldn’t support a hotel of that size. It was never a commercial success and was demolished in 1920.

The Schall family owned a bookstore on the first floor of the building and lived there as caretakers. They moved the store to the Rubey building on Washington Avenue in 1903, but continued to live in the old hotel. They sometimes entertained in the grand ballroom, hosting dances and church bazaars.

Mr. Schall died in 1909, but his widow stayed on in building for several more years.

In the November 14, 1929 Colorado Transcript, Neil West Kimball–grandson of George & Eliza West (Transcript founders)–provided the following reminiscence of his youth in Golden.

The Bella Vista hotel…was an old mysterious sort of building even when I was a youngster and many the wild stories we made up about it.  I remember that I thought Mrs. Schall a most courageous person to live alone in such a monstrous structure.  It was a real occasion for me when I was allowed to accompany my mother on a call to Mrs. Schall and wander through the long corridors and neglected rooms. And once, never shall I forget the thrill of that day, Mrs. Schall gave me permission to go to the roof and catch for my own pigeon cote, some of the many pigeons which made their homes in the eaves of the old hotel building.

The Golden Transcript (originally called the Colorado Transcript) has been publishing since 1866. The Golden History Museum has been working on digitizing the historic issues. You’ll find old Transcripts online at coloradohistoricnewspapers.org.
