GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT
The front page of the April 7, 1966 Colorado Transcript shows children playing on Dino, the mascot at the Sinclair gas station.
According to the Oil Company’s website, Sinclair started using dinosaurs in their advertising in the 1930s. The dinosaur association was immediately popular. The company had several life-sized fiberglass dinosaurs fabricated for display at the 1964-65 New York World’s Fair. After the fair closed, the dinosaurs went on a nationwide tour.
In the mid-1960s, smaller fiberglass dinosaurs began appearing at Sinclair stations across the country–like the one in the photograph above! It was probably new at the time, making it front page-worthy.
Golden’s Sinclair had a Dino until a few years ago. It appeared in Google Street Images through 2017, but was gone by December of 2018.
Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
