Golden History Moment

The June 3, 1977 Golden Transcript announced a reception to honor Verna Katona (1912-2009) on the occasion of her retirement. Mrs. Katona taught kindergarten at Mitchell Elementary for twenty years. By all accounts, she was a gifted teacher.

She was also an active contributor to the Golden community, working on projects that we still enjoy today. In 1971, she was part of the small and stubborn group of people who worked to save the Astor House from demolition–in short, a founder of the Golden Landmarks Association.

When that group was working to restore the building, she organized groups of elementary school students to help: they scraped paint and wallpaper. The GLA website quotes her as saying “I wanted them to get the feeling that Golden was an important place, a unique place.”

She was also instrumental in saving the Guy Hill School. When it was threatened with demolition, Verna and others worked to have to moved into Golden. For many years, it stood on the grounds of Mitchell School. She would conduct classes there, dressed in period costume, to let children experience school as it was conducted in “the old days.” When the old Mitchell School on 12th Street was demolished, the Guy Hill Schoolhouse was moved to the Golden History Park.

After her retirement in 1977, she joined the Peace Corps and worked for two years in the Soloman Islands.

Verna was also a talented artist: the Golden History Museum has one of her paintings on display in their “Legendary People” exhibit.

(Her son Robert inherited that talent: he’s a professional artist, living in Applewood. Check out his work!)

The Golden Transcript (originally called the Colorado Transcript) has been publishing since 1866. The Golden History Museum has been working on digitizing the historic issues. You’ll find old Transcripts online at coloradohistoricnewspapers.org
