Public Art, History Museum and Foothills Art Center Events, State Room Grand Opening, Live Music

The Public Art Commission will meet at 9AM in City Council Chambers. Staff will discuss the Community Art Partnership, which is a plan to do temporary art installations around town and encourage people to do Instagram posts showing the art. They will discuss two unveiling events–one for the Elk sculpture at Heritage Road and Kimball Ave (April 27th), and the other a major piece just off Highway 93 at the north entrance to the city (date TBD). Nathan Ritchie of the History Museum will update them on a mural they hope to paint on the history museum. Foothills Art Center plans to hold an Artsweek Golden again this year, July 8th-14th. The Chamber’s Golden Fine Arts Festival is scheduled for August 17th and 18th. See the meeting agenda….

At 10AM, the Friends of Dinosaur Ridge will host a talk on archosaurs, the crocodilians, pterosaurs, birds, and a bit on the dinosaurs at the Dinosaur Ridge Discovery Center (map).

The Library will offer Wee Create – Sensory Art for preschoolers and toddlers from 11:15AM-12PM.

The State Room is holding their Grand Opening today from 5-7PM. This is the bar above the event center in the new Buffalo Rose. The windows look out over Washington Avenue, and it’s quite a snazzy place. Join them for classic cocktails and appetizers.

The History Museum is hosting a lecture tonight from 6-7:30PM: What’s Cooking in the Archives? A Food Historian’s View of Colorado Culinary Literature. Food history and food studies are more popular than ever. From bookshelves to university classrooms, we study the history of food because it tells us about what, how much, and why people ate what they did. Food history also tells us much about how people thought about health, what factors influenced their choices, and the rules of social engagement. This lecture will examine and explore what we can learn from cookbooks, an often-overlooked source for historians, by highlighting works from one of the most significant culinary archives in Colorado, the holdings at the University of Denver’s library.

Presented by Carol Helstosky, Associate Professor and Chair of the History Department at the University of Denver. She is the author of Garlic and Oil: Politics and Food in Italy (2004); Food Culture in the Mediterranean (2009) and Pizza: A Global History (2008) and editor of The Routledge History of Food (2014). She has been teaching food history to undergraduates for 20 years, utilizing the culinary archives at the DU library’s Special Collections and archives. Register here….

Foothills Art Center is hosting MGD/PHO Multimedia Exhibition at 6PM. We are celebrating Red Rocks Community College Graphic Design, Photography, and Video students’ work.
