Golden History Moment

Mayor Burt Jones of Golden has received an invitation to participate in the opening, on November 15, of the new subway on Thirty-eighth avenue, one of the important streets out of North Denver extending into Golden. This subway will give a direct line of travel through North Denver into Golden which makes this new structure of considerable interest locally.

A subway? In Denver? Coming to Golden? How could I not have known about that?

The rest of the article detailed the elaborate celebration plans. Mayor Jones would come from Golden, the Aurora Mayor would come from Aurora. They would meet Mayor Stapleton of Denver and Governor Ammons (of Colorado) at Union Station. The Burlington Railroad would provide a Zephyr to carry the dignitaries to the site of the new subway.

Once there, Mayor Stapleton and Governor Ammons would hold a large paper hoop. The Golden Mayor would stand on the west side and the Aurora Mayor would stand on the east side. At the signal, the two would thrust their hands through the paper and shake hands–thus, officially opening the subway. A parade, speeches, and music would follow.

The “subway” phrase continued to boggle me. I looked for more articles about 38th Avenue, more articles about subways, and old Denver maps–before and after the 1937 “subway” was built.

It turns out that the project consisted of a series of road improvements and a new viaduct over the South Platte River and railroad tracks. Together, they created “a direct line of travel through North Denver into Golden.” The “sub” part of the “subway” referred to the tracks below the new viaduct.

I know that road projects were always a big deal in the 1930s, but this one struck me as a bit over-blown, with very confusing nomenclature!

The intersection of 38th Avenue and Fox Street survives, but it’s now in the shadow of I-25, which opened in 1963.
