CITY MEETINGS
9AM Public Art Commission Meeting @ City Hall
A community group is working on a potential World War II memorial. They may eventually come to the Public Art Commission for advice. Staff suggests that they ask City Council for a policy decision, since we don’t currently have memorials for any wars.
Two Art Commissioners joined City staff on a walk through Ulysses Park, which is due to be redesigned, to identify locations for public art. The Parks staff would like to offer graffiti walls to the community.
The Commission recently discussed locations for their next piece of “monumental” art, and narrowed it down to Lions Park and “the trail spur up to 8th Street, which intersection is just east of the 6th Avenue bridge over Clear Creek.” The Commission is favoring the latter site.
Staff has scheduled a study session from 9-10AM on Friday, July 14th, to meet with the group hoping to get some public art representing women.
The call is open for artists who want to create “itty bitty art” projects. Submissions are due July 30th and selection is anticipated at the August 3rd PAC meeting.
For more information on today’s topics, see the meeting packet.
4:30-6PM Race, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Task Force @ City Hall
The REDI (Race, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion) Task Force is composed of community members and city staff who have a key role in implementing aspects of the REDI Action Plan, finalized by the City in November of 2022.
The Task Force focuses on promoting accountability for implementing the REDI Action Plan and coordinating community-wide efforts to advance equity. The task force meets monthly in Council Chambers (911 10th St.) on the first Thursday of the month from 4:30 to 6 p.m. The public is welcome to attend. GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) was originally called the Solar Energy Research Institute (SERI). It was founded in 1977, under the Jimmy Carter administration. For the first several years, the staff worked in rented office space in the Denver West office park.
The July 6, 1982 Golden Transcript included this drawing of SERI’s first permanent structure, the Field Test Laboratory Building. Colorado Senator Bill Armstrong and Representative Tim Wirth were planning to attend the ground-breaking on July 7th.
The building will include high-bay (two story) laboratories for large equipment such as gasifiers, chemical laboratories, assembly areas for outdoor experiments, storage and warehouse space, and other general services. Work in the building will include research in the areas of thermochemical conversion, biotechnology research, multi-fuel vehicle development and hybrid energy systems.
The 70,000 square foot building was scheduled for completion in July of 1983. The land used was part of 300 acres transferred from the State of Colorado to the Federal government.
Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
