The Safer at Home and in the Vast, Great Outdoors protocol is in effect. City and County fire restrictions are in place. The City is requiring masks on public property unless you’re six feet apart and the Creek is fenced off. See the City’s website for more details….

City Council had a lengthy discussion last night about an emergency ordinance to strengthen our mask requirements. This is an issue that people feel strongly about in both directions. If you want to watch the discussion, view last night’s Council Meeting. If you want to see the revised version that they will discuss again and vote on tonight, check their agenda on the city website after noon today. Last night was the first reading, and tonight is second reading, when they’ll vote on it. Since it’s an emergency ordinance, the vote must be unanimous to pass. It wasn’t unanimous last night; Councilor Haseman voted against it.

6:30PM City Council Regular Business Meeting

The consent agenda includes two items:
Modifications to the Sales Tax Code that will require businesses without a physical presence within the City limits to collect and remit Golden sales tax (vote on June 23rd).
Resolution expressing support for the Colorado Communities for Climate Action 2020-2021 Policy Statement.

Read a Proclamation for Tom Young Day, July 6th.

The Mayor will appoint a new member to the Historic Preservation Board, to replace one of the recent appointees.

Approve a $2,975,000 contract for Muller Engineering to design a new Interchange for US 6 and Heritage Road. That intersection has significant backups and the City would like to have an underpass/overpass. Muller Engineering designed the (relatively) new interchange at US 6 and 19th Street.

They will vote on the Emergency Ordinance to increase requirements for wearing face masks. In order to pass, this ordinance will require a unanimous vote.

They will vote on a non-emergency ordinance regarding face coverings to be voted on July 23rd.

They will discuss what to do about Clear Creek access (how’s it going? do we continue the restriction? discontinue it? do we need better fences?).

The City Manager will provide an update on the City’s responses to COVID-19.

6:30PM 2020 Dinosaur Ridge Gala – A Virtual Event

The pandemic is causing significant financial hardship for our cultural organizations, which are highly dependent on visitors for their income. Many of them are turning to virtual events for their annual fund-raisers, as Dinosaur Ridge is doing tonight. Here’s what they have to say:

Now more than ever, we need our friends’ and champions’ support to keep the lights on and the gas in the buses. Every dollar raised will go towards educating a future scientist, preserving our fossils, and keeping discovery alive. We’re asking for help and celebrating the help that has already been given.

The featured speaker for tonight’s event is Dustin Growick, Host of The Dinosaur Show. Their online auction includes lots of interesting items, including dinosaur toys and sneakers, fossils, sports memorabilia, wine, craft beer, pottery, jewelry, original artwork, wine glasses for dog lovers, gift certificates for restaurants, theater tickets, mini-vacations, spas, dog spas, hot springs, car washes, car repairs, plumbing service, and groceries, and a cast of an ankylosaur skull!

If you don’t want to bid on any of those items, you might just want to make a donation. In that case–do it here!

You can help! Buy a Ticket to tonight’s online event and/or Bid in their online auction and/or Make a donation

Remember, we have Dinosaur Ridge to thank for our own Triceratops Trail.

Golden History Moment

For your viewing pleasure, here’s a 2 minute video that someone took in the 1940s while riding an interurban from Denver to Golden and back. It’s interesting to see how rural the land was at that time.

The terminus in Golden was located on the east side of 13th and Washington Click to enlarge
The video flashes on the map shown on the left side of this photo. The Golden Gem Theater appears on the right. Excerpt from a Denver Public Library photo. Click to enlarge.

On the trip back, you pass the Coors mansion and Lakeside Amusement Park (which looks exactly the same as it does now).

The line went right through the brewery grounds – Click to enlarge
