Real World Events
6-9PM Golden Game Guild Meet-Up Mondays @ Golden Game Guild
6:30PM Downtown Development Authority Meeting
The DDA will hear updates regarding both Miners Alley and the Astor House. The meeting packet includes the following:
Miners Alley Playhouse Update
• Semple Brown (the architect) has completed drawings for Phase 1.
• The engineers and subcontractors will be completing drawings soon.
• DT Construct was selected as the General Contractor.
• Plans should be submitted for permitting soon.
• The grand opening is now planned for the MAP annual fundraiser event on September 24th.
• The Capital Campaign Committee is in formation and MAP welcomes suggestions.
Astor House Update — The design team for the Astor House project indicate that they will be submitting initial building permits for the removal of the “non-original” rear addition and demolition of the wash house by mid-April. They are also planning a groundbreaking for late May, with more information to follow. They indicate that they have secured sufficient funding for the construction phase and are anxious to start.
Staff attended a meeting with representatives from both projects to conceptually discuss the ideas that have been suggested for Arapahoe Street and 11th Street streetscape (behind the New Playhouse building) in this block, as well as the current parking area north of 12th Street. Staff indicated to them that it would be helpful to have the comprehensive parking management study mentioned above, complete or in progress, prior to discussing any major changes. In addition, staff may partner with FAC to apply for a CDOT Revitalizing Main Steet grant for some or all of the Arapahoe Street project.
Staff Report
The Planner Director had a job posted for an Economic Development Manager ($85-115K), who would replace Steve Glueck as the Executive Director of the DDA and GURA. That listing has disappeared, but a new job has appeared for a Planner ($60-105K).
The staff report mentions that two downtown buildings are on the market–1101 and 1111 Washington Avenue.
Commission Schneider, who is also the Executive Director of the Golden Civic Foundation, will be working with city staff to update DDA grant guidelines.
They plan to begin Sunday trash collection in April.
Restaurant seating on sidewalks and in parking lanes will begin soon. They are also looking at allotting some public right of way for general seating–not necessarily connected to a particular business.

Apologies for a Bad Link
Last week, I wrote about the one year anniversary of a tour I took of the Coors office building. I included a link that I labeled as Must-See TV. It should have linked to the meeting where City Staff described all the wonderful things we could do with that building. Unfortunately, I linked instead to a PDF. Here’s the correct link:

Golden History Moment
During the 1930s, large swaths of the high plains–including eastern Colorado–experienced the years-long drought, high winds, and massive soil erosion that became known as the Dust Bowl. Jefferson County was still largely agricultural at that time. Its population of farmers and ranchers must have watched the Dust Bowl with horrified fascination, hoping that it wouldn’t extend this far north.
The March 28, 1935 Colorado Transcript reported that a sizable dust storm had visited Golden.
Dust Storm Hides Sun in Golden on Tuesday
The bright rays of the sun were cut off from Golden by a cloud of dust carried in on an east wind from the plains country on Tuesday afternoon.
Golden people, who have been hearing about the terrific dust storms which have been sweeping the plains country of eastern Colorado and western Kansas for the last 10 days were given a mild demonstration of what they must have meant to the prairie folk.
About 3 o’clock Tuesday a huge cloud of dust traveling westward was seen approaching the gap between North and South Table mountains.
Raising to pass over the Table mountains the cloud of dust passed over the city without giving Golden much of a dusting. The dust overhead was so dense that Table and Lookout mountains were obscured and the sun was hidden for the rest of the afternoon.
