Golden History Moment

The “M” on Mount Zion turned red for the first time in 1935. The bulbs were changed as a surprise on December 7–the night of the freshman ball. The M stayed red for a month, until January 6, 1936.

The M was built in 1908. According to the December 12, 1935 Colorado Transcript, it is 107 feet x 104 feet and each leg is 10 feet wide. It took 50 gallons of paint to refresh it each fall.

It was lighted (with temporary wiring) for the first time in October of 1931. The result was so striking that students raised money for permanent wiring, which was installed the following March.

Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
