6:30PM Historic Preservation Board Meeting
HPB will consider a request by the owners of 904 Arapahoe Street (map) to be included in the 8th and 9th Street Historic District. The house is located within the district, but is currently considered “non-contributing.” (As I recall, when the historic districts were created, homeowners could choose to opt out. One reason an owner might opt out would be to avoid any pressure to conform to historic guidelines. One reason an owner might opt in is to be eligible for historic preservation tax credits.)

East Street Historic District

After the business meeting, they will hold a study session to discuss a draft letter that staff has written to suggest HPB’s stance on the proposed new zoning code. One thing that surprised me in the letter is a suggestion that the East Street Historic District be defined as “Transition or Core” (in the parlance of the new zoning code) rather than “Peripheral” (single family homes). Transition and Core areas allow cottage compounds, duplexes, and triplexes. At present, the East Street Historic District is almost entirely single family homes. Should be an interesting discussion.

Golden History Moment

Colorado Transcript – April 5, 1930 – click to enlarge

The April 5, 1930 Colorado Transcript included this advertisement for The Fair Store’s 9 Cent Sale. There were some great deals!

Above: Architectural rendering of the building at 23rd and East from the April 5, 1971 Golden Transcript. Below: Google Street View of that building.

The April 5, 1971 Golden Transcript featured this soon-to-be-built office building at the corner of 23rd and East Streets. It was to have 7,000 square feet of office space and parking for 30 cars. It would cost an estimated $170,000 and would be done the following August.

Apparently plans changed, because another article in the October 9, 1972 Transcript said that the building had “been sitting half-completed for over a year and residents in the area have complained it is a hazard.” Also apparent is the fact the somebody finally finished it, because it’s there today!

Many thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
