A REQUEST FROM ROTARY
Host Families Needed for
2023/2024 Rotary Youth Exchange Program at Golden High School
The Rotary Club of Golden is looking for three families in Golden to host a 17-year-old male exchange student from Italy during the 2023/2024 school year. Each family would welcome this student into their home for approximately three months (late August to November, December to February, or March to May/early June). This student will be a full-time student at Golden High School.
Host families provide a safe, warm, and nurturing environment for the student and room (a bedroom or shared bedroom with a same-sex host sibling), three meals a day, transportation to and from school and school activities, and pay for student expenses when on family outings.
The Rotary Club of Golden will provide the student with a monthly stipend for incidentals, clothing, and personal entertainment when out with friends. We also pay required school fees, sports fees, and provide support for needed equipment and uniforms.
We ensure that the exchange student has medical insurance and liability insurance for the program. During the year your exchange student will attend several mandatory Rocky Mountain Rotary Youth Exchange events for which the club will provide transportation and financial support including a ski trip in the winter.

GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT
CORRECTION: Saturday’s Golden History Moment concerned Buffalo Bill’s funeral, which happened in 1917. The article originally ran in 2020–the year of the pandemic shutdown. It mentioned that Buffalo Bill Days would be canceled for the year. That is not true in 2023–the reference was left over from 2020 and should have been removed. We’re looking forward to this summer’s Buffalo Bill Days, July 28th-30th, 2023!

The June 5, 1958 Colorado Transcript announced that Golden was about to double in size. The City was incorporated in 1871 and–except for two small annexations in1903–had remained the same size until the 1950s. At that time, our post-war population boom had people eyeing the rolling plains south of town, in search of new places to build.
In 1950, Everett Bunzel laid out a new neighborhood south of 23rd Street. He requested annexation to the City of Golden, so the City grew by a few blocks at that time.
In 1957, a group of developers announced plans to build a Disneyland-inspired amusement park south of Golden. The park was to be called “Magic Mountain.” The development was at some distance from downtown Golden, but other property owners–including the Colorado Central Power Company (now Xcel) and the new Presbyterian and Seventh Day Adventist churches had also requested annexation south of town.
Council decided to grant all of the requests at once. They included the Golden Cemetery in the annexation. The Cemetery had always been well outside the City limits.
Interestingly, at that time, the only resident in the entire new 1957 annexation was Art Meinecke. He was the sexton (caretaker) of the Golden Cemetery.
Magic Mountain opened in 1959 but went bankrupt in less than a year. New owners took over the defunct park in the early 1970s and renamed it “Heritage Square.” The new park operated until 2015, when the property owners (Martin Marietta Materials, owners of the adjacent quarry) announced their decision to close it.
