Day of Remembrance Ceremony
At 2:30 this afternoon, the community is invited to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Memorial Garden for the 31st Annual JCSO – FOP Lodge 18 / Day of Remembrance. The memorial ceremony will honor fallen JCSO Sergeant Sean Renfro, Sergeant Dave Baldwin, Sergeant Tim Mossbrucker, Deputy Paul Miller, Deputy William Truesdale and Undersheriff Clarence Fugate. Many Golden citizens are concerned at the proliferation of three-story townhouses replacing older, single family homes in Golden. The new structures are often built close to the property line, with little or no greenery separating the building from the sidewalk.
As you may recall, a group of citizens have requested that City Council and the Planning Commission modify CMU-NC and CMU-CC1 zoning. The requests included:
• Change the CMU-NC code (in the Central Neighborhood) to provide for a 40% maximum lot coverage when a project is asking for an SUP to be 100% residential. This conforms with the current residential code in the surrounding neighborhood. It also avoids a downtown Denver urban-like setting which is not consistent with Golden’s small town charm.
• Extend the CMU-CC1 zone boundary all the way south to run parallel with and at 24th Street. By removing the ability to have a third story, any new building would be more harmonious and compatible with the surrounding neighborhood—again maintaining the community feel of the Central Neighborhood and keeping Golden’s small town look and feel.
• Re-evaluate the street scape requirements from the curb to the building. Provide greenery between the sidewalk and the street and the sidewalk and the building. This provides a more welcoming walkable neighborhood feel. Great examples of this are Lewis Court and the town houses on 8th Street and Arapahoe.
The Planning Commission added a thought of their own, which was “for corner lots in residential districts to be used for additional units than would otherwise be allowed by code.” This was quite a departure from what citizens had requested, but is included in tonight’s discussion.
The Planning Commission will be discussing these requests tonight at 6:30 in City Council Chambers. If you are concerned about changes to Golden’s older, central neighborhoods, plan to attend tonight’s Planning Commission meeting and listen to the deliberations.
