Dave Powers got some great photos yesterday, of people playing in Clear Creek. See them on our Facebook page.
The GURA board meets tonight at 6:30 in City Council Chambers. It will be broadcast live though the City website. There has been considerable discussion about the “triangle” of property at South Golden Road and East Street. The public and nearby business owners suggested a number of improvements, such as plantings, picnic tables, a play structure, etc. The parks department has decided to leave it as-is. A new building will soon be under construction near Natural Grocers. This will be used as an orthodontist office. The building currently being constructed at 13th and Jackson will be called “Prospector Place,” and the building that will soon at started at 12th and Jackson will be called “Miners Point.” For details of any of these items, please see the meeting packet, by clicking on the word, “Agenda” next to this meeting.
Tomorrow night’s Golden Beer Talks looks particularly interesting. Dr. Catherine Lozupone, University of Colorado at Denver Professor in Medicine and Microbiology, will tell us how the trillions of bacteria that inhabit your gut influence your health.
Your gut contains a complex community of bacteria, fungi, and viruses (collectively called the ‘microbiome’), which emerging research has shown can influence a wide array of aspects of your health—ranging from whether you are obese, to whether you have heart disease, or are depressed.
Dr. Lozupone’s research lab in the Department of Medicine at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus works with clinicians to study the gut microbiome in the context of a variety of diseases, including with HIV infection, Autism Spectrum Disorders, asthma, and in cancer patients undergoing stem cell transplant. She will discuss this research and also, more generally, discuss what has been learned over the past several years about the typical composition of the gut microbiome and how it is influenced by factors such as age and diet.
Golden Beer Talks is a homegrown endeavor organized by a few local citizens passionate about nurturing community connections, supporting local businesses, and learning a little something new now and then. If you want to attend, be at Windy Saddle Cafe by 6:30 tomorrow night.
