Passport Palooza, Golden Bike Cruise, June Appeal, and a Presidential Visit

The former Heritage Square amusement park. All but one of the buildings have been demolished, the remaining one being a large steel building. The railroad bridge over the entrance is still intact, but the rails and ties have been removed. The alpine slide track is overgrown.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN GOLDEN TODAY?

9AM-5PM Passport-palooza @ Jefferson County Courthouse (map)
Although passports are a federal program, Jeffco’s Clerk & Recorder office processes applications as a community service, as capacity allows. We know passport appointments can be hard to come by, so we’ve blocked off all of May 30 for Passport-palooza!

If you plan to attend, we ask that you RSVP to help with estimating staffing needs. Bring all required documents and a completed application to 100 Jefferson County Parkway in Golden. See the list of required documents that apply to your situation. If you’re an adult and your passport is expired by less than five years, you must renew by mail.

GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT

Black and white photos of Guggenheim Hall and President Herbert Hoover.

The May 30, 1935 Colorado Transcript announced that former President Herbert Hoover would be receiving an honorary doctorate at the Mines graduation. As big fans of President Roosevelt, the Transcript was clearly scrambling for something nice to say about his predecessor. The best they could come up with was that–as an engineer–he had probably worked hard as a college student.

A Presidential visit is a big deal (even one you don’t like), so I expected to find a photo and an article about this Presidential visit in the following week’s Transcript. Instead, they covered it in two sentences at the bottom of page 2, column 2, under the header “Short Miscellany.”

Colorado Transcript – June 6, 1935

Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
