It’s free! Come join us at GHM for a fun evening!

6-8PM Golden Community Conversations
The City has ambitious goals regarding affordable housing. They recently commissioned a housing study which concluded that we’ll need 3,100 additional homes over the next ten years. The State legislature and Governor recently enacted new legislation that eliminates Golden’s 1% growth limit. With those two forces as work, we can expect to see a lot more density in Golden over the next decade or two. Do you have an opinion about that–either pro or con?

Golden Community Conversations will host three meetings this fall about affordable housing. The dates are August 24, September 27, and October 5. These events will focus on discussion, feedback and information-gathering from attendees.

Notes and information gathered from these events will be compiled into a summary report in a community report-out and directly to the City of Golden.

If you have opinions about Golden’s housing plans, complete the brief interest form available at GoldenCommunityConversations.org. Additional details and a location will be provided to those who submit the form.

It’s too late to join tonight’s discussion, but they hope you will register for the September 27th or October 5th meeting.

6PM Mobility & Transportation Advisory Board Meeting @ City Hall
The MTAB group will have one final discussion about the Bike/Pedestrian Masterplan and send it to City Council, recommending that it be adopted. It’s not actually included in the meeting packet, but you can expect wider sidewalks and additional bike lanes. They will also review a list of small projects in the downtown area that are designed to make it more walkable and bikeable. They will also study the City’s Street Classification map.

GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT

From 1921 until 1956 (on and off), Golden High School students produced a weekly column for the Colorado Transcript. They covered sports, classes, and who was dating whom. It was a nice way for the school to connect to the rest of the community.

The October 11, 1928 issue included this historically significant paragraph:

There’s a rumor that the school team is to have a name. Everybody is to get their thinking caps on and furnish a name that is suitable for the peppiest and best team in the league.

On October 25th, they announced that the Journalism Club would give a box of candy to the person choosing the best name.

The November 15th column announced the finalists: Golden Buffaloes (which got 7 votes), Golden Maroons (8 votes), Golden Mountaineers (10), Golden Bears (14), and the Golden Demons (131 votes). Harriet Summers suggested the winning entry and won the box of candy. Wouldn’t Harriet be surprised to know that the school is still using the Demons mascot, 95 years later?

Variations on the Demon theme shown on yearbook covers over the years – see the yearbooks

To celebrate Golden High School’s 150th anniversary, the Golden History Museum made arrangements to scan the school yearbooks going back to 1916. Amazingly, they were able to track down almost every issue. I enjoyed looking at the old advertisements and photos of Golden, as well as the student pictures from the years where I knew the kids.

Stop by the museum tonight between 6 and 8PM to see the yearbooks and other Golden High School memorabilia!

Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
