Golden History Moment

December 20, 1940 was the last day of school before Christmas break. The Transcript wanted to help the kids celebrate, so they sponsored a free movie at the Golden Gem Theater.

The theater planned to show “Flying Duces,” starring Laurel and Hardy, plus a cartoon and two reels of comics. Santa Claus was there, to personally receive letters and to hand out treats (candy, peanuts, popcorn, and oranges). The show started at 2PM, so the schools must have dismissed early that day. The Transcript assured families that those who took the streetcar to school (Pleasant View and Wide Acres residents) would be able to catch the 4PM car and reach home before dark.

“The picture shows Santa Claus and only small part of the downstairs section. Every seat and all available standing room was filled.” – Colorado Transcript – December 26, 1940

All 635 children who were enrolled in Golden schools were invited, and most of them accepted: the December 26th edition of the Transcript reported that more than 600 boys and girls were present. Despite the crowding, the paper reported that a good time was had by all.
