Parade Help

We’re having a parade Saturday morning, and the Chamber could use some help. It’s a pretty easy job–they just need people stationed along the parade route to remind the spectators not to dart out into the road. Here’s their message:

The Olde Golden Holiday Parade is this Saturday from 10:30 am to 11:30 am. This event brings in thousands of people to support our local economy but is only possible with the help of community volunteers. Please support the event by volunteering to help as a parade usher for 90 minutes. Parade ushers will be assigned to a section of the parade route and help make sure our parade spectators stay off the road and are respectful of our parade participants, animals, and floats.

Golden History Moment

Visiting Santa at the Railroad Museum – click to enlarge

The December 8, 1983 Golden Transcript detailed the seasonal activities happening in Golden. Santa was due to arrive at the Railroad Museum on Saturday, where he would ride on the narrow gauge train along with the kids.

The Historic Homes Tour was scheduled for Sunday. The tour was organized by the Mount Lookout Chapter of the DAR (who managed the Golden Pioneer Museum at the time) and the Golden Landmarks Association. In addition to the five historic homes, it included stops at the Pioneer Museum, the Astor House, and the Guy Hill Schoolhouse.

The Library was having an open house on Thursday the 15th, complete with refreshments and holiday music.

The Astor House was hosting a Victorian Christmas Party on Friday night, complete with a bonfire in front of the museum. Father Christmas was scheduled to visit, carolers were lined up to provide the music, and Gene Child was planning to roast chestnuts.

The Briarwood Inn–all decked out for the holidays!

There was a city-wide home decorating contest, with first prize being a dinner for four at the Briarwood Inn.

Then, as now, the Holiday Art Market at Foothills Art Center was open seven days a week.

I was interested to see that the brand “Olde Golden Christmas” was in use so early, so I looked back to see when it originated. Apparently it was invented in 1982. That was the nadir of downtown fortunes, with many stores closed or failing. “Olde Golden Christmas” was a grassroots effort by the Golden Chamber, Golden Landmarks Association, and the museums to make Golden a more attractive place to visit and shop.

Next year will be the 40th annual Olde Golden Christmas!

Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
