Golden During a Pandemic

Virtual ContentOnline Meetings – Social Distancing

It has been interesting to see how Golden has handled the pandemic. It’s true that we’ve had to cancel many major “gathering” events, (4th of July Celebration, Buffalo Bill Days, Arts Week, and the Fine Arts Festival), but we have seen a lot interesting innovations and workarounds to keep life going.

Virtual Content

The annual Metro Denver Green Homes Tour starts today. Normally, we buy a ticket and then travel from home to home, seeing how people have employed solar and other techniques to minimize energy use. This year, they’re doing the whole thing virtually. I think it will be a good experience–they’re providing video tours of some of the “greenest” homes from past tours. They also have new content, including experts from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and Golden’s own Peter Ewers from Ewers Architecture, who will present, “All Electric Buildings, the Key to our Energy Future.” The tours and lectures will be online starting at 8AMthis morningcheck it out!

The October 3, 1963 Colorado Transcript announced the death of Gertrude Bell. Bell Junior High was still under construction at the time. The article says that she was born in Golden in 1876 and attended the South School. She taught 43 years in Golden before retiring in 1947. She taught at Fairmount for one year, the North School for 33 years (six of them as principal), and Central School (later called Mitchell) until she retired.

To the young people who will attend “her” school beginning December 2 and for generations to come the name “Gertrude Bell” will have little significance, but to thousands of children taught by Mrs. Bell over nearly half a century the school will stand as a well-deserved monument to one of Colorado’s outstanding educators and human beings”

Mrs. Bell is buried in the Golden Cemetery.

Many thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
