GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT
On January 27, 1950, Bill and Dorothy Harmsen, owners of the Jolly Rancher ice cream store, held a fund-raiser to benefit the March of Dimes Polio Fund.
The Harmsens have volunteered to turn over all monies received on Friday, January 27, from the sale of their delicious, and fast-becoming famous Jolly Rancher ice cream. Harmsen, who is already well-known in Jefferson County as the “Jolly Rancher” himself, has asked that a member of the polio drive committee be there to run the cash register on this day from 11 a. m. to closing time, 11 p. m., and turn all cash received over to the March of Dimes. Golden civic organizations are behind Harmsen 100 per cent, and are asking everybody to buy all the ice cream they can eat, give away, or store in the deep freeze.
Colorado Transcript, January 19, 1950
The Harmsens operated the Golden store from 1949-1951. By that time, they had developed their very popular hard candy and built a production facility in Wheat Ridge.
The Golden History Museum acquired a collection of Jolly Rancher artifacts from John Harmsen, Bill and Dorothy’s son. Learn more….
