Golden History Moment

The “Golden Opportunity Development Company” was a precursor to the Golden Urban Renewal Authority. It was formed in the early 1980’s to help revitalize Golden’s crumbling downtown.

Downtown-style shopping had lost favor in the 1970s and ’80s, as Americans decided that shopping malls were the place to be. As fewer shoppers patronized downtown Golden, stores began to close and storefronts stood empty. The massive Hested’s Department Store, which filled half a block of Washington Avenue, had been standing empty since 1977.

The August 23, 1983 Golden Transcript contained a lengthy pitch by the Golden Opportunity Development Company (GODC), aimed at enticing new retailers into downtown Golden.

Have you grown weary of working for someone else? Are you looking for purpose and identity? Perhaps owning your own business would allow you to fulfill the dream and find the identity. If so, the time is right now and the place is here in Golden. Golden Transcript – August 23, 1983

The article goes on to offer advice on exterior and interior design, signage, advertising, inventory management, etc. The GODC offers to help a budding business owner apply for a Small Business Administration loan.

If the aspiring entrepreneurs needed space for a new business, there were a lot of spaces available. 1106, 1107, and 1115 Washington were vacant. The former Hested’s store had been leased and the new managers were trying to turn it into a mini shopping mall, with multiple stores under one roof. Lilly Langtree’s restaurant at 12th and Washington had collapsed, and that space was likely to become available.

In nearly every one of us there is an entrepreneur. It only takes that moment to make the quantum leap from indecision to decision. The time is perfect for Golden. Golden’s time may be perfect for you. Golden Transcript – August 23, 1983
