Golden History Moment
Golden had interurban rail service to Denver beginning in 1891. The first automobile came to Golden’s streets in about 1902. Soon, others joined it–first in a trickle, then a flood. For several decades, autos and streetcars muddled along, sharing the streets, occasionally colliding.
The growth in auto traffic saw a temporary setback during World War II, as gasoline and tire shortages brought people back to mass transit. When the War ended, America’s auto industry resumed making cars, Americans bought them in droves, and American roads quickly became crowded. The lumbering old streetcars came to be seen as an irritant in traffic.
The January 6, 1949 Colorado Transcript announced that the interurbans were being routed off of Washington Avenue, Golden’s main drag, because “they have provided a traffic hazard since the city has grown in population so that there are many more cars on the street.”
Thereafter, the interurbans would back out of the station onto Jackson Street before making the return trip to Denver.
This accommodation didn’t last long. In 1950, The Denver Tramway Company (the R.T.D. of its day) decided to close down all commuter rail service and provide buses instead.
Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
