Clear Creek – April 24, 2010 – Click to enlarge

By order of both the County Sheriff’s Department and the Golden Police, Clear Creek is closed to all recreational activities. You may not wade, swim, kayak, tube, or in any other way enter the Creek. This is to protect our first responders as well as people who want to play in the Creek in April. We don’t want Golden’s first responders to have to rescue people from the Creek and break social distance (6 feet) in the process. Learn more….

The State-Wide Stay-at-Home Order is in effect through April 26, 2020. Everyone is asked to wear a mask that covers the nose and mouth when leaving the house. City and County fire restrictions are in place.

Golden History Moment

In early March, I shared Arlone Child’s book tracing the history of the Golden Landmarks Association (and the saving of the Astor House).

Earlier this week, I shared Judy Denison’s children’s book about her mother’s experience during the 1918 influenza epidemic.

Today, I have third book for your virtual library: Funiculars of Golden Colorado, which I wrote in 2011. I love the cover of this book–it’s a painting by Jesse Crock. Here’s the text from the back of the book:

Funicular railways were popular tourist attractions in early 1900s America. The spread of railroads over the previous half-century had provided new-found freedom to visit other parts of the country. In hilly or mountainous locations, funiculars—or incline railways—offered an easy and exciting way to reach the heights and admire the best views.

This book tells of two funiculars built in Golden Colorado, in 1912 and 1913. Their popularity rose and fell in a very short time, because in that same period, the automobile was coming into wide use. Convenient as rail travel was, the touring public soon found that driving themselves was even better. Discover an enchanting interlude in Golden Colorado’s history!

Once we’re all set free from our homes, you can find non-virtual copies of this book at the Golden History Museum and the Colorado Railroad Museum. Enjoy!
