Future Golden
Yesterday’s Golden Cultural Alliance meeting produced several interesting nuggets of information. Several of the museums will begin re-opening next week. The Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum will be open six days/week beginning next Monday, June 1st. The Colorado Railroad Museum will also be open six days/week, beginning on Tuesday, June 2nd. The Mountaineering Museum will be open by appointment beginning on June 15th. The Mines Geology Museum and Buffalo Bill Museum are still working to identify appropriate re-opening dates. Miners Alley Playhouse is waiting until conditions are safer before they resume performances.
Please see the museums’ websites for more information about days, hours, mask requirements, and sanitation procedures.
Golden History Moment
Notice the advertising mural across the street in this photo. It is painted on the outside wall of a variety store. A new building was constructed in the vacant lot in 1949. The Fair variety store operated in the new building until the mid-1990s, and the mural remained covered for many years.
When Baby Doe’s clothing moved into the new building in 2002, the new owners uncovered the mural. You can see it to this day, inside Baby Doe’s!
The Golden Transcript (originally called the Colorado Transcript) has been publishing since 1866. The Golden History Museum has been working on digitizing the historic issues. You’ll find old Transcripts online at coloradohistoricnewspapers.org.
