Golden History Moment
I’m always a little vague on when Arbor Day occurs. In trying to track down that fact, I learned that it varies from state to state. Colorado always celebrates it on the third Friday in April, so ours occurred last week. Many states are celebrating today. The National Arbor Day is April 30th.
The Mount Lookout Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution planted many Arbor Day trees over the years in Golden. As early as 1934, they were organizing Arbor Day tree-planting ceremonies in Pioneer Park (which no longer exists).
During the 1950, 60s, and 70s, many Golden organizations were working to turn the wild land near our new municipal buildings into a park. The Golden Kiwanis built the city campground; the Golden Optimists built the playground, and the Golden Lions Club added the athletic fields. The D.A.R. built the Triangle Park between City Hall and Washington Avenue. Since the Visitors Center and the upper and lower trails were added, that area isn’t as “triangular” anymore, but many of the trees that they planted still remain!
The Golden Transcript (originally called the Colorado Transcript) has been publishing since 1866. The Golden History Museum has been working on digitizing the historic issues. You’ll find old Transcripts online at coloradohistoricnewspapers.org.
