New Development at 21st and Ford, More Good News from the GABF

Proposed project at 21st and Ford Streets

6:30PM The Historic Preservation Board meets tonight in City Council Chambers. They will be asked to provide a “Certificate of Appropriateness” regarding property within the East Street Historic District. A developer would like to demolish the Farmers Insurance building at 21st and Ford Streets. It would be replaced by a 3000 square foot office building on Ford Street and five townhomes along 21st St. The townhomes will include basements, two floors, and rooftop docks.

The meeting packet states that the project is appropriate because, “The 21st and Ford street site currently occupies a predominant corner in a vibrant historic neighborhood. The existing site is largely defunct with massive amounts of street-fronted pavement and centralized, unassuming structures which creates an environment under-representative of what a historic corner in Golden Colorado should be.”

The owner of 1218 Washington Avenue (the Ace Hi) will brief the board on some facade improvements he plans to make to his building, which was built in 1878 to serve as Golden’s Opera House.

After the business meeting, they will adjourn to a study session. They will consider steps they can take to protect the Astor House. The Chair proposes that they do an archeological study of the land behind the hotel, using ground penetrating radar. They will identify “contributing elements” that should be considered part of its landmark designation. They will begin the process of getting local landmark designation from the City. See the meeting packet for more information on any of these topics.

One of my readers reports that “That makes seven straight years (every year since they’ve been open) which is the longest ongoing streak for a Colorado Brewer.” WOW!
