5PM City Council Study Session and Regular Business Meeting @ City Hall
City Council will begin with a study session at 5PM. The regular business meeting, which includes public comment, will begin at 6:30PM. Both meetings will be streaming on the agenda page.
Study Session
Steve Glueck will provide an overview of short-term and long-term transportation project goals. This year, the City will be applying for state and federal funding for the US 6 and Heritage Road interchange; improvements to 44th Avenue between the City limits and the Coors Technology Center; and a local shuttle bus service.
Planning Director Rick Muriby will update Council on short term rental and tourist home licenses. “there are currently 35 licensed Tourist Homes and 38 licensed Short-Term Rentals in Golden (13 of which are within ADUs).” He will seek council’s guidance regarding a few exceptions to current code that were grandfathered in when the new rules went in effect five years ago: three that were not owner-occupied and one that has two ADUs.
Parks Director Rod Tarullo will discuss the proposal to redesign Ulysses Park to include multi-use sports fields.
Business Meeting
To provide public comment, you can do it in person at the beginning of the 6:30 meeting or send an email to PublicComment@cityofgolden.net.
The consent agenda includes extensions of several contracts: IMEG Corp and Muller, both for engineering services; and Hinkle & Company for auditing services. The City website will be designated as the official place to post public meetings.
The Deputy Public Works Director will request approval of a $584,000 pipeline replacement in our Vidler collection system, which carries water from the other side of the continental divide.
The owners of 600 Arapahoe St. (map) will ask Council for an exemption to our noise level restrictions. They hope to built a multifamily residential project next to Highway 58.
They will review the City’s annexation plan. Generally the City only annexes property if owners request it, and only if we stand to gain by annexing. There have been inquiries both north and south of our City limits, which may or may not eventually result in annexation.
They will approve the number of new housing allocations available in 2023 under the 1% growth limit. (The number is 88.)
They will approve a $3 million grant request to support a new 125 unit housing project at 17805 South Golden Road (map). This property has recently been purchased from Xcel by Habitat for Humanity. “The community will consist of townhomes and condos, 1-4 bedrooms, with a majority of those being 3-& 4-bedroom homes. The homes will be sold to households with average incomes around 80% of area median income (AMI).” Learn more….

Golden History Moment
Twice before, I’ve written about serious accidents involving Colorado & Southern trains–one in 1905 and one in 1906. In both cases, the Colorado Transcript marveled that the accidents weren’t even worse. The paper ascribed the could-have-been-worse results to “the legendary luck” of the Colorado & Southern railroad.
The January 10, 1907 Colorado Transcript describes another legendarily lucky accident. The passenger shuttle train to Golden left Denver at 10AM. It was a foggy morning and the train was running at about 16 MPH when it collided head-on with a freight engine that was sitting on the track.
The article details the injuries. The most serious was Mrs. Osborne, Golden resident, who was hurled into a hot stove and may have incurred internal injuries. The conductor’s head went through a window and he was badly cut. Other passengers incurred sprains, “bad bruises,” and “severe cuts.”
The railroad attributed the accident to the heavy fog. They said it was impossible for the engineer to see more than a short distance. They were curiously silent as to why there was a freight engine sitting on the track when a passenger train was scheduled to come through.
The shuttle trains between this city and Denver always make a good time, making the run in thirty minutes. The train was going about sixteen miles an hour when the crash came, and it is the proverbial luck of this division of the Colorado & Southern that more people were not injured.
Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
