Parks Director Rod Tarullo describes Memorial Day as “the Super Bowl for cemeteries.” It’s true that our parks department does a great job every year of sprucing up the cemetery in time for the big day. I’m even more impressed every year at the job they do of refreshing Parfet Park in the one day between Buffalo Bill Days and National Night Out.
Come down to the park tonight for food, music, face painting, and a chance to meet our police officers. Check out their vehicles (including a Flight for Life helicopter) and learn about crime prevention. This is always a fun, pleasant, family-friendly evening.

Golden History Moment
The August 2, 1956 Colorado Transcript reported that the new Golden High School, on 24th Street, had been completed ahead of schedule. The plan had been to move to the new school in January of ’57, after the winter break. Instead, the students and staff would be able to start the school year in their new digs.
The 1956 High School replaced the one on 10th Street, which had been built in 1924. The 10th Street building then became Golden Junior High.
When the school district decided to replace the 1956 buildings, they looked for a large piece of ground–big enough to accommodate the school, athletic fields, and parking lots. The Golden community, however, didn’t want to move the school to a remote location–they liked it where it was.
The school district and its construction contractors pulled off an impressive feat: they spent the 2007-2008 school year building the new school behind the old one. Then, over the summer, they demolished the old school in time for the start of the 2008-2009 school year.
Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
