Golden History Moment

Mansplaining? – June 24, 1976 Golden Transcript

The June 24, 1976 Golden Transcript featured an article and photos entitled “Coors opened to women – Women learn ins, outs of brewery.” Red Rocks Community College offered a Career Exploration Workshop that allowed women to explore non-traditional jobs–meaning those normally held by men.

The article mentioned “waitressing, nursing, teaching, and clerical work” as being traditional jobs for women. The trip to Coors allowed the 50 workshop participants to operate fork lifts and observe the industrial processes at the brewery. The article mentioned several times that men’s jobs paid better and that brewery workers started at $15,000. It doesn’t say what traditional female jobs paid at the time.

Workshop participants were also able to talk with female Coors workers about the effects their work had on their families. One employee commented that her husband had been supportive of her production jobs, but her brothers and their wives asked why she wanted to work in a male environment, in jobs usually held by men.

If you were around in 1976, you’ll probably recognize the phrase, “You’ve come a long way, baby.”

The Golden Transcript (originally called the Colorado Transcript) has been publishing since 1866. The Golden History Museum has been working on digitizing the historic issues. You’ll find old Transcripts online at coloradohistoricnewspapers.org.
